My family has always loved trivia. Every dinner, my husband would come up with themed questions, and we'd race to answer first. So when a friend invited us to a trivia night at a local bar, I jumped at the chance. It seemed like the perfect social activity for empty nesters like us!

To make the evening even more special, we reached out to old friends from our kids' elementary school days. They eagerly accepted, and suddenly we had a plan! I was thrilled to try something new—an activity I'd seen advertised but had been too nervous to attempt before.

Finding the Best Trivia Nights Near You

You might be surprised by how many local establishments offer trivia nights. Start with a simple Google search for "trivia nights near me." You'll discover options at bars, restaurants, and even wine bars!

Venues partner with different trivia organizations, and each has its unique style:

  1. Old-School (paper-based) trivia: A live host asks questions, and teams write answers on paper.

  2. App-based trivia: Players use an app to see questions, and one person submits answers.

Both styles are fun!  As you become a regular, you'll start recognizing familiar faces, opening doors to new social connections and friendships.

Trivia Night Tips

Before heading out, consider these factors to make your night even more enjoyable:

Ambiance

  • Do you prefer restaurants, bars, breweries, or wine bars? Pick a spot that fits your vibe.

Food Options

  • Some venues have great happy hour specials or food trucks. Others might not serve food, so check if you can bring your own.

Crowd Atmosphere

  • Different venues attract different crowds. Some may skew younger, while others have a more laid-back, older crowd. Try a few to find your favorite!

Trivia Host

  • Every host has their style. Some give helpful hints, while others are more competitive. See what you enjoy most!

Create Your Team

Trivia nights are also a great excuse to reconnect with old friends! Check out our blog on Making New Friends After Your Kids Move Out for some helpful tips. Before heading out, check if the venue has a team size limit, and don’t forget to choose a fun team name. Our first night, we panicked and picked our summer pool mascot—not exactly creative, but it made for a good laugh!

What to Expect at a Trivia Night

Our first trivia night was a blast, even though we were complete newbies. The host was welcoming and explained everything before the game began. The only hiccup? We forgot to think of a good team name!

Prepare for your first trivia night with these tips:

  • Plan for about 2 hours of play, but arrive early if the venue doesn't take reservations.

  • Inform the host you're there for trivia to ensure proper seating.

  • Expect a variety of categories, including history, pop culture, science, and more.

  • Be ready for special rounds, such as music identification or picture quizzes.

  • Learn to strategize by wagering points based on your confidence in each answer.

Trivia Night Etiquette

To keep the fun going for everyone:

  • Respect the host and other teams by keeping noise levels down during question-reading.

  • Put away your phone (unless it's an app-based game) to avoid the temptation of cheating. You will be asked to do this at venues that don’t have app-based trivia.

  • Be a good sport, whether you're winning or losing.

Benefits of Regular Trivia Nights

There’s more to trivia than just fun! Here’s what else you’ll gain:

  • Mental Stimulation: Trivia challenges your brain and keeps it sharp.

  • Social Interaction: You’ll meet new people and strengthen old connections.

  • Learning Opportunities: Each night, you’ll walk away knowing something new.

  • Stress Relief: After a long day, it’s the perfect way to unwind and have a laugh.

Popular Trivia Night Themes

Trivia nights often revolve around different themes. Some of the most popular are:

  • General Knowledge

  • Pop Culture

  • Sports

  • History and Geography

  • Music Through the Decades

Prizes

At some venues, the winning teams receive prizes like gift cards! Usually, these can’t be used the same night but can be redeemed at future events. Our team didn’t win the first time, but we came close—only to lose our spot with a “go big or go home” wager! That’s part of the fun though, right?

Preparing for Trivia Success

Want to step up your trivia game? Here are some quick tips:

  • Read the news and keep up with different topics.

  • Watch documentaries to expand your knowledge.

  • Practice at home with trivia apps or board games.

  • Listen to podcasts like Good Job Brain or Triviality.

  • Build a team with friends who have different areas of expertise.
